The Effects of COVID-19 Will Ripple through Food Systems

[Scientific American] As winter gives way to spring, farmers across the U.S. are ramping up for the growing season—hiring workers, purchasing materials and taking orders. But measures to rein in the COVID-19 pandemic may derail some of those efforts, experts say. “Everybody is scrambling to figure out what to do,” says Gail Feenstra, deputy director of the Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program at the University of California, Davis, who studies food systems and supply chains. “There’s just a lot of disruption.”
Though the extent of the blow to U.S. food production is unclear—and will depend on how long the pandemic and countermeasures last—widespread food shortages are unlikely anytime soon, several researchers say. Agriculture is considered essential work under the shelter-in-place orders expanding across the country. But farmers must still adhere to social-distancing requirements and can be buffeted by regulations and other changes along the food supply chain, such as the shuttering of restaurants.
Some work can easily continue with little interruption. For example, many U.S. farmers producing staple crops, including wheat and rice, do so with mechanized tools that already limit human-to-human contact and fall within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines for limiting the spread of the coronavirus. The nonprofit International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) reported earlier this month that COVID-19 does not currently pose major threats to overall global food security because adequate stores of staples remain available.
But higher-value and more specialized crops face a greater number of hurdles, says Will Martin, a senior research fellow at IFPRI and a co-author of the report. These foods—such as some fruits and organic produce grown by smaller-scale farms—generally require more labor. They are also often sold to restaurants and farmers markets, many of which are now widely closed or have reduced service across the country, rather than directly to the grocery stores that are still operating. Even if these farmers are able to continue working, they may have limited places to sell their goods. “That’s a big problem,” Martin says. Higher-value goods are also more likely than major staple crops to experience a price spike caused by COVID-19 disruptions, according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization.
The situation is to be expected in a pandemic, Martin says, citing a 2006 World Bank report that outlines how efforts to contain such outbreaks—including restaurant closures and disruptions to public transportation and tourism—tend to take a larger toll on the global economy than the hours of work lost from people falling ill. The report estimated that a modern pandemic similar to the 1918 Spanish flu would result in a 0.9 percent loss in GDP because of sick workers, compared with a 1.9 percent loss linked to policies enforced to control infection. Farmers of high-value crops get hit especially hard by those policies, Martin says.
One example comes from apple orchards, which require large crews to plant and prune trees. Pruning helps eliminate diseased branches and gives foliage more access to sunlight. But many apple growers rely on seasonal workers from outside of the country for these tasks, and many of these workers are struggling to get visas processed because of embassy and federal office closures. Without an adequate workforce, growers may have to leave trees unplanted and branches unpruned. This neglect could lead to losses later this season and in future years, says Diane Kurrle, senior vice president of the USApple Association, a nonprofit organization based in Falls Church, Va., that represents growers and others in the industry. Tiny threads of light radiate energy to every cell of the body. The Hindus call these healing filaments Nadis; chakras form at points of intensity. Light then surges from these tributaries of energy—Nadis and chakras—to a mighty confluence of light energy known as the Pillar of Light or the Tube of Light.

The Ascended Masters rely heavily on the power of the I AM Presence for protection. Conscious calls to the I AM Presence activate the Pillar of Light, insulating lower bodies—causal, astral, and physical—from difficult karmas. The Pillar of Light and the addition of the Violet Flame construct a spiritual shelter much like the protective force of mantras, spiritual ceremonies, and prayers. That's why the consistent practice of these transcendental exercises raises spiritual consciousness: the summoning of greater fields of light ameliorates and eliminates seemingly insurmountable difficulties, and creates miracles.

The Christ Self—also known as the Higher Self or Guardian Angel—protects the physical body, even though it operates at a lower vibratory rate than the Presence. It also provides an intermediary power between the I AM Presence and the outer human form. Simply speaking, this intelligent body of light serves the energies of the I AM as a Step-down Transformer and a propellant of action in the physical plane. Scholars say the bodies of the I AM Presence and the Christ Self are just as tangible in their own realms of vibratory action as the body in its physical world.

Coronavirus: Stay stocked up without stockpiling with these clever food storage hacks

The outbreak of COVID-19 and the possibility of a two-week self-isolation period has prompted a surge of panic buying across the UK. 
Supermarkets have reported shortages of everyday food products including bread, milk and dried pasta - and now many shops are limited purchases to four items per customer.
In a bid to help the more vulnerable shoppers, some big brand stores have also introduced an elderly-only hour at the start of the working day.  
And several 24-hour supermarkets have reduced their opening hours to restock goods ready for the following day.
But there are several productive things we as consumers can do to reduce the need to stockpile masses of goods.
Whether it’s learning better techniques on how to store our food, understanding what healthy portion sizes are or preparing emergency meals while we’re fit and well - our small actions can make a big difference.
Here’s a roundup of top tips and tricks on cleverly storing food amid the coronavirus outbreak.
According to, fresh milk can be frozen for three to six months. 
Though the texture and colour of the milk may change once thawed, it is still safe for consumption.
Pour your milk into ice cube trays and when frozen transfer the milk cubes into a zip lock bag and store in your freezer.
Thaw at room temperature and add to tea and coffee when desired.
Here’s a list of ways you can extend the life of individual fruit, veg, bread and dairy products.
Carrots - Keep in a container of water in the fridge to keep them crisp.
Asparagus - Stand them in a jar with two inches of water, cover loosely with a small plastic bag, and keep in the fridge.
Berries - Food52 advises washing berries in a one part vinegar three parts water solution to destroy bacteria and mold spores. Dry the berries thoroughly afterwards and store in an airtight container.
Bananas - Cover the banana stem with cling film or foil to stop them for going brown. Bananas can also speed up the ripening process of other fruits. Store them separately from the fruit bowl (or on top of fruits that need ripening).
Milk - Keep your milk and other dairy products at the back of your fridge where the temperature is colder.
Mushrooms - Keep mushrooms fresh and dry by keeping them in brown paper bags.
Onions - Lifehacker suggests hanging onions in your (clean) tights with a knot separating each one.
Tomatoes - Store tomatoes stem-end down outside of the fridge.
Potatoes - After analysis Hoaxorfact found that storing apples and potatoes together stopped the potatoes from sprouting.
Spring onions - A tip found on Nigella told us to keep our spring onions chopped up in plastic bags in the freezer. When you're ready to use them, add them straight into the pan.
Salad greens - Wash, dry thoroughly and wrap them in kitchen roll or with a paper towel.
Bread - Avoid mouldy bread by keeping your loaf in the freezer and pop a slice into the toaster to thaw (or toast).
Cheese - BuzzFeed writes that you can rub a little bit of butter to the exposed side of cheese to keep it from drying out. Read More

5.7-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Near Salt Lake City: ‘The Last Thing We Need Right Now’

[New York Times] A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck near Magna, Utah, on Wednesday morning, knocking out power for tens of thousands of people in the largest earthquake the state has felt since 1992, the authorities said.
The earthquake struck the area at about 7 a.m. local time, with a preliminary measurement of 5.7, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. There were no reports of serious injuries in Salt Lake City, the police said, but Rocky Mountain Power, a major provider in the region, said that about 55,000 customers in the area had their power knocked out.
For miles around Utah’s capital, china rattled in cabinets, pictures plummeted off walls and power snapped out. At the Salt Lake Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the tremors were so intense that the trumpet of the angel Moroni fell from the temple’s highest point. Many residents, staying indoors because of measures to stem the coronavirus outbreak around the country, suddenly faced a new hazard — anything that might fall on them in their homes.
“Plan to strap furniture to the walls,” state emergency officials quickly advised.
“I know the last thing we need right now is an earthquake, but here we are,” Mayor Erin Mendenhall of Salt Lake City said on Twitter. The city’s airport temporarily stopped flights, and the school district said it could not provide meals or food boxes Wednesday as planned to help students during the coronavirus outbreak. Read More

How to Stay Healthy

[Choosing Longevity] I understand that the Coronavirus threat is real, and many people have become sick, but panic is not a good idea right now.
Fear impacts your immune system - it stimulates the release of cortisol, a corticosteroid.
Cortisol is immunosuppressive and down regulates key inflammatory transcription factors, like NF-kB and AP-1. Plus it increases chemicals that suppress cytokines, which are chemicals involved in inflammation.
The decreased cytokine production inhibits pro-inflammatory gene transcription, essentially weakening your immune response, and leaving your system more vulnerable to infection.
I hear over and over again to wash your hands, don’t touch your face, use hand sanitizer, and stay away from places where you'll be in close proximity to people. While these are great suggestions, they're just a start.
What no one in the mainstream media is telling you is that your food may be depleting your immune system, and what foods you need to stop eating and which ones to increase, so if you do get exposed, your immune system has a fighting chance.
Here are some of my suggestions - and what I'm doing to protect myself and my family.
Avoid sugar and flour. Flour gets turned into sugar very quickly. Sugar paralyzes macrophages, types of white blood cells responsible for engulfing microbial invaders and keeping them from causing you harm. Studies show that eating or drinking 100 grams of sugar can reduce the ability of white blood cells to kill germs by 40 percent and the immune-suppressing effect of sugar can last up to 5 hours.
In the 1970’s Dr. Linus Pauling discovered that vitamin C helps the body to combat the common cold. As part of the same research, Dr. Pauling found that sugar severely slows down this process. Glucose and Vitamin C have a similar chemical similar that when a white blood cell tries to pull in more Vitamin C from the blood around it, glucose can get substituted by mistake.
If the concentration of glucose in the blood gets too high, the white blood cell’s concentration of Vitamin C will drop below the level needed for optimal infection fighting.
Pauling found that at a blood sugar level of 120, the white blood cell’s ability to absorb and destroy viruses and bacteria is reduced by 75%. Many people are running around with sugar greater than this all day long. It can take four to six hours for the Vitamin C concentration in the white blood cells to reach the optimum concentration again.
In addition to avoiding sugar, it’s a good idea to increase Vitamin C intake - both food form and supplementation. Colorful vegetables and fruits are a great source of Vitamin C, along with beta carotene, a precursor of Vitamin A, which is important for mucous membrane's ability to fight infection
In addition to Vitamin C and Vitamin A, other nutrients that can be important for strong immune function are Vitamin D, zinc, iodine and magnesium.
My daily immune protecting elixir during this pandemic contains:
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 2 cloves garlic (or 1 teaspoon garlic powder if fresh not available)
  • 1 inch piece of fresh ginger
  • 1 inch piece fresh turmeric (or 1 teaspoon powdered if fresh not available)
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne (more if tolerable)
  • 1-3 grams of Vitamin C - liposomal if available, or buffered powder
  • 1 teaspoon liquid zinc
  • 1 teaspoon powdered Quercetin
  • 1 dropperful of Lugol’s solution iodine
  • 1-2 drops (5000 - 10,000 iu) Vitamin A
  • 2000 - 5000 iu liquid Vitamin D
  • 1 tablespoon of 7 mushroom powder from Z Natural foods (or other medicinal mushrooms)
  • 1 teaspoon astragalus
Add ¼ cup water or more as desired and blend well.
You don't have to make it exactly like I do - improvise if you're missing anything, or add things you know you need.
In addition, I’ve taken a few extra doses of Vitamin C throughout the day, along with tincture of Oregon grape, Biocidin and Herb Pharm throat sprays, and echinacea.
Bottom line for protecting yourself and your family from coronavirus, the common cold, the flu and other infectious diseases is a healthy immune system.
  1. Avoid sugar and things that can be converted to sugar rapidly, like alcohol and flour products.
  2. Eat lots of green leafy vegetables that are loaded with antioxidants and nutrients that support your immune system.
  3. Eat sea vegetables for their mineral rich content.
  4. Eat lots of garlic and Italian herbs like oregano, thyme and rosemary, which have potent antiviral effects (essential oils can be used here).
  5. Consume anti-inflammatory foods and spices like turmeric, ginger and cayenne.
  6. Balance your intake of omega 3 fats, from nuts and seeds like chia, flax, hemp and walnuts. Algae is a great source of omega 3 fats as well. Deep ocean fish (not farmed) is a good source of omega 3 fats, but be careful of mercury and PCB contamination. Avoid heated, processed and hydrogenated fats.
  7. Support your immune system with herbs like echinacea and astragalus unless you’re actually sick, in which case you’ll need stronger antiviral and immune stimulating herbs.
  8. If you show signs of infection, add herbs and nutrients like Oregon grape, colloidal silver and elderberry. Check out Stephen Buhner’s book Herbal Anti-Virals for ideas.
  9. Sleep 8 hours a night.
  10. Meditate or engage in Heart Math or other mindfulness practices to reduce stress.
